To borrow a quote from Dead Seriously (who probably borrowed it from someone else), I made my own little motivational poster (you can too) in response to my teaching evaluations from this summer. Here are a few highlights.
- "He loves what he does. He's a total geek at heart, but he teaches in such a way that it makes the students laugh, all the while learning "boring" statistics. He's not too young to be immature, but not too old to be.. well, old."
- " personality makes environment less intimidating."
- " Very good at simplifying complex subjects"
- " He shows an genuine interest in the subject and actually is excited about certain topics."
- " Stats is really boring, not much you can do there"
- "Provide examples that actually reflect what is on the tests. Don't enjoy stumping students, that's just masochistic."
- " I would only say to make the homework worth more for the overall class grade."
- "A very deceptive professor. His texts and exams are 10 times harder than what he actually teaches. I kept up with all the notes and readings; however, his questions are nothing like the examples."
Finally, some overall comments:
- " Professor Miracle Gro is amazing! Hire him for real at UCI!"
- " don't make summer school classes in the afternoon hard to stay awake. :)"

Your self-praising is shameless.
I think your super-smart student is confused about the definition of masochism...perhaps they meant sadistic?
btw, although I cannot truthfully claim that I am the origin of the quote you reference, I can say that I'm the only person to whom is truthfully applies.
Shameless? I presented a fair and balanced view of my teaching evaluations. I am just reporting the facts.
"Fair and balanced"? Ha.
"I don't know what they are talking about...I think they might have some ties to subversive goblin activities"
(plus, the criticism seems to come from morons who don't know the very important difference between S & M, which undercuts their credibility to begin with)
Sorry to cut in guys, but I just wanted to say that "geeks at heart" make the best teachers. And love the picture. You know, you don't have to be so depressed, you'll see her tomorrow.
Thanks Megan. I know I don't have to be depressed. But, I guess that I have imprinted on the Gardener, so I have a hard time being away from her.
So when does the Gardener come home? Could ya talk to Peter, he is in your same facial hair boat.
Back in the day, the best feedback I ever got:
"She's hot, but her class sucks."
Let's just say I was a touch embarrassed to face my superiors.
