I'd recommend drilling up wherever we can on American soil while we work toward a solution other than fossil fuel. However, if we drill and prices come down then we'll drag our feet researching other solutions...
I'm as optimistic as they come, but I've learned to take what any politician says at face value only. Their comments are usually nothing more than empty promises to help them get elected or re-elected.
Thats unfortunately true. The incentives for a politician are not aligned with those of the electorate in general: that is long term solutions. Much like consulting, politicians have a lot to gain by prolonging a perceived problem.
If energy independence was actually attained during the Carter administration, that would be one less talking point for a politician. Imagine if each generation of politicians solved long term problems; there would be nothing left for politicians to do (which is not in line with their best interests).
